September is World Suicide Prevention Month, and although it is a very helpful way to spread awareness about an extremely important topic, it’s important to remind everyone that it shouldn’t be limited to just one month. It’s crucial to keep the conversation around suicide going all year and to support the people close to you every single day.
If you’re experiencing suicidal thoughts, you are not alone! Many people struggle with a variety of things in their lives, including mental illness, which is nothing to be ashamed of. It can be tough to seek help and admit your thoughts and feelings to someone, but talking to someone you trust, whether that be a friend or family member, is a big step towards a happier future.
If you are supporting someone, here are some tips to help you have a safe conversation with a loved one about suicide:
- This is a difficult conversation for anyone, and you do not have to have all the answers yourself. Resources are always available to support and guide you in this important conversation.
- When talking about suicide with a loved one, help them stay grounded by speaking softly and taking deep breaths together. Stay connected to the story being shared with you and get clarification when possible.
- Listen and validate – you do not need to offer advice or know all of the answers. The truth is, there is no perfect way to have the conversation, but there are ways to make it feel comfortable.
- Make sure that you are in a place to have a deeper conversation. Give them time to share at their own pace without passing judgment.
Things we can all do together to help prevent suicide:
- Stop making jokes about suicide
- Accept depression as a real illness and not just “sadness” that someone can get over
- Create a safe space for them to talk. Open communication is one of the best ways to prevent suicide
- Educate yourself regarding mental illnesses and causes of suicide
- Check in on others instead of just waiting for them to come to you. Many suffer in silence, so as not feel like a burden.
Finally, to anyone who is struggling right now, the world is a better place with you in it. Never forget that. We love you!
