It’s always tough to come up with fun things to do with your significant other – especially if your financial situation is tight. The lockdowns are over in Edmonton, and summer is finally here! Couples are out enjoying the weather, and others are looking for someone to enjoy it with. Here is a short and simple guide for those of you in Edmonton that are looking for cheap date ideas for the summer of 2021.

Outdoor Dates

There are plenty of cheap date ideas in Edmonton during the summer! We have many beautiful areas to walk through and explore. Two of our favorites are the River Valley and the Neon Sign Museum.  The North Saskatchewan River Valley is North America’s longest stretch of urban parkland. At 22 times the size of New York City’s Central Park, this natural wonder is located right here in the heart of our city! There is plenty of wildlife to look at and many viewpoints from which to admire the cityscape. Explore the 160 kilometers of paths and trails with your date for free. Pro Tip: Bring an iced coffee or some bottled water to keep cool on a hot day. Another fun and completely free date idea is to head downtown, and snap some photos of your date by the Neon Sign Museum. It’s an outdoor collection of functional historic signs that tell a story about Edmonton’s past. When the sun goes down, the beautiful neon signs create romantic lighting that your date will love, and we guarantee it will brighten the vibe.

Indoor Dates

Here are a few indoor date ideas for the summer that will allow you to escape the heat and enjoy each other’s company with some air conditioning.  Visit the Art Gallery of Alberta! The admission prices are $14 for adults, $10 for out-of-province students, “pay what you may” for Alberta students, and free for minors under 18. The museum frequently updates its exhibitions, and it’s a very pleasant and peaceful place to get to know your date a bit better.  If art isn’t what you fancy, the Old Strathcona Farmers’ Market may be for you! It’s open every Saturday, and is a collection of many Edmonton vendors selling their locally produced products! You can walk through it and look around, buy a small, interesting treat, or spend a bit more on some fresh ingredients to cook a meal later that evening. Either way, it’s a great time.
